App Review: Wedding Speech Creator

I’ll give the creators of this app full marks for trying to solve a problem a lot of people have: how to say something that doesn’t make you sound like a blithering idiot in front of a hundred or more people on someone’s super-important day. And they have the right idea: there’s something for everyone, and selections that include funny, sentimental, or funny and sentimental. The problem is that humor is not an easy thing to achieve. What the authors have tried to do is create some connective tissue to set up stories that the person speaking still has to insert. It’s not poorly written, but my cliché radar started beeping as soon as I read a single line. Maybe it’s not fair: I’m a writer after all. But there’s an opening for someone who really cares about this problem to do it with just a little more imagination. That said, the app is easy to use, fast, intuitive. With only a few dozen different templates (many of which use similar rhetorical formulas), I’d wish the selection was a little more extensive, however. Here’s the bottom line: Price: 5 $2.99 is a little much for something with relatively low content. But if you really need it, it’s probably worth it to give you some ideas if nothing else. Features: 6 Fairly one-dimensional, which isn’t necessarily bad. It does let you save your speeches and browse in different ways. But it would be nice to see something like a “joke generator” or something—anything to make it a little more engaging. Ease of Use: 10 Very intuitive and fast. Aesthetics: 3 The monochromatic look gets boring quickly. Total Score: 24 out of 40 If you’re really challenged about speechmaking, give it a try. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.
